Want to give your interior a quick makeover? Start with the window

Do you ever feel like making a quick change to the look of your flat? But then you realise it’ll take a lot of time and money. Nothing could be further from the truth. Sometimes, all it takes is a small detail to transform the look of a room. Changing your window décor can be a particularly interesting idea. Contrary to what you might think, it doesn’t have to cost a fortune, and the result will pleasantly surprise not only your family but also your guests. Today, we’ll show you how to quickly change the look of a window without the need for lengthy and expensive renovations.

How does window décor affect the whole room?

A window is a fairly prominent feature in a house or flat. It is visible both from outside the building and from inside. That is why many people pay close attention to its design. One of the most commonly used elements is net curtains, which help to make the interior feel cosier. The décor of a room featuring net curtains and drapes appears more complete. If you prefer to follow the minimalist trend, you can opt out of these elements in favour of roller blinds or venetian blinds with wooden slats. In that case, you could place flowers and small, simple ornaments on the windowsill, which will complement the overall look of the interior. Bear in mind that often the windowsill itself can be an element that complements the entire design.

When selecting elements for your window décor, bear in mind that, in this case, the details matter. For example, if you opt for delicate fabrics for your net curtains and drapes, the room will gain a sense of ‘lightness’ and freshness. It will appear more spacious. On the other hand, thick and heavy curtains will allow you to completely block out the light and shield yourself from prying eyes from outside without having to fit roller blinds or shutters.
The colours you choose for your window décor can also have a significant impact on how the room is perceived. They can also affect your mood. We wrote more about how colours affect your mood in our post on how to use upholstered panels in a child’s bedroom.

Is it easy to change your window décor?

You can sort out a change to your window display in anywhere from a few minutes to an hour. It all depends on the scope of the work you’re planning and whether you’ll have someone to help you. The simplest option is to swap the knick-knacks, decorative frames or flower pots on the windowsill for something else. Changing the textiles – net curtains and drapes – may take a little longer. Here, a lot will depend on how you want to hang them and whether you’ll be draping them. Bear in mind that special gathering tapes, which are sewn into the top of the net curtain, will make things much easier for you. Thanks to these, you won’t have to stand for ages with your arms raised – neat pleats form ‘all by themselves’.

However, there is one element that causes sleepless nights for many people who want to ensure the whole window area looks aesthetically pleasing. Namely, the internal window sill. This is a problematic element, particularly in older buildings. Over the years, it often becomes damaged and discoloured. What then? Replacing the entire window sill with a new one can be time-consuming and, depending on how it was fitted, also costly. However, there is a clever solution that will allow you to refurbish your window sill in the proverbial five minutes. It is an internal window sill cover.

Window sill cover – what is it?

It is a product that allows you to quickly and effectively refresh the look of your internal window sill. You don’t need to remove the old window sill to fit it – it is applied using adhesive. This eliminates the need for a long and tedious renovation. The cover is made from a material that is easy to cut, making it simple to adapt to the dimensions of an existing window sill. A wide range of colours and matching finishing accessories allows you to choose a model that will complement the other elements used in your interior design.

How do you choose a window sill cover to achieve an interesting finishing effect?

Window sill trims are available in several colour options. If you’re looking for a versatile look, opt for a plain model. It will suit many interior schemes and virtually any interior design style. If you wish to emphasise the window arrangement even further and match it to the style of the room’s décor, choose a product with a design inspired by natural materials such as wood or marble.
The window sill and the sill cover are usually chosen to match the window frame. However, you can also base your choice on how well they match other elements, such as panelling or skirting boards, as well as the overall colour scheme dominant in the interior.

When is it worth opting for a window sill cover?

This is a good solution, above all, if you want to quickly refresh the look of a room. It’s also useful when the old window sill is difficult to remove, which is particularly common in older buildings. You can also use a window sill cover if you’re renting a flat and aren’t allowed to carry out major renovation work. In that case, all you need to do is fit the cover onto the window sill and adapt the look of the flat to your preferences.

Fitting a window sill cover – see how easy it is!

You’ll be able to fit the window sill cover yourself without too much trouble. However, there’s nothing to stop you from asking someone for help – it’ll go even quicker that way. Remember that before you start fitting, the cover must be left to acclimatise for at least 5 hours in a room at a temperature of 20 degrees Celsius. Bear this in mind when planning your installation time. In the meantime, measure the window recess accurately. If necessary, cut the cover to the correct size. You can do this using a fine-toothed hand saw or an angle grinder. Clean the surface, then apply the installation adhesive. The next step is to fit the cover. Remove the protective film from it. Finally, secure the end caps using quick-drying adhesive. You may find it helpful to watch the instructional video available on this page.

How do you look after window sill covers?

It’s very simple. On a daily basis, simply wipe the cover with a dry, soft cloth to remove dust and light dirt. For tougher stains, you can use a damp cloth. A great advantage is that the cover requires no additional care or maintenance.
